Quick start
Install Dictato and record your first dictation
Download and install
Get the latest build from dictato.ai and drag Dictato.app into your Applications folder.
Grant permissions
On first launch, Dictato will ask for:
- Microphone — to record your voice
- Accessibility — to detect the Fn key and paste into other apps
- Screen Recording — for screenshots and on-screen text context
You can re-grant any of these later in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Pick a transcription model
Dictato ships with a default on-device model. Open Settings → Model to download a different one. See Models for what to pick.
Record your first dictation
Put your cursor where you want the text. Then:
- Hold Fn and speak
- Release Fn — Dictato transcribes and pastes
That's it. The overlay appears in a corner of your screen while you talk.
